A day filled with smiles, sharing, and vital education recently took place at the Centre for Youth Integration (CYI) for Roma children from the substandard settlement of Vuka Vrčevića in Belgrade, thanks to a successful collaboration between OlamAid volunteers and the Centre for Youth Integration (CYI) as part of the project Food Security for Balkan Minorities.
Together, the organizations jointly hosted special interactive workshop focused on the critical themes of food security, nutrition, and basic food processing for local children. Approximately 10 Roma children participated, transforming the area into a vibrant outdoor classroom.
"Working alongside the Centre for Youth Integration allowed us to leverage local expertise and build deeper trust within the community," said Sonja B., an OlamAid volunteer. "The aim was to share a joyful, hands-on experience and provide crucial life skills, especially in contexts where resources are scarce."
The children had a joyful time engaging with the volunteers through simple, practical activities and discussions. They learned: about the the importance of a balanced diet for health and energy, Simple food preservation and preparation tips that can maximize the use of available resources.
The workshop provided a positive, enriching environment where the Roma children were encouraged to ask questions and share their own knowledge and experiences related to food. It was a beautiful example of how education, delivered with compassion and a playful spirit, and powered by strong community partnerships, can empower young members of vulnerable communities.
OlamAid and the Centre for Youth Integration are committed to their mission of aiding communities in crisis and transitioning towards sustainable livelihoods. This workshop is one step in a larger effort to support Roma children of the Vuka Vrčevića settlement with practical skills and hope for the future.
